Tortuga Island, or Isla Tortuga, is one of the two islands that constitute the Islas Negritos Biological Reserve, just off the Nicoya Peninsula.

Composed of 120 hectares, Tortuga Island is a beautiful landscape of hills situated over a half a kilometer of white sand beach. The recipient of the blue flag certification, the island is perfect for swimming and snorkeling in blue water. On the way to Tortuga is the island of the San Lucas, which some people call the Alcatraz or Devil’s Island of Latin America.

Created to protect the volcano and surrounding cloud forest, Poas Volcano National Park is both a tourist attraction and center for scientific research. Eruptions occasionally occur, but are phreatic in nature, meaning a blast of hot steam occurs when magma heats ground water.

Capped in clouds, the best time to visit Poas is during the dry season, from January to May. Otherwise, you may make the trip, only to find the volcano obscured by clouds. It’s best to come early as the clouds begin to form around 9 am.

Located just two hours from the international airport in the capital Costa Rica, Jacó is an energetic beach town, popular with surfers and party goers. At night the town lives up to its reputation as the Costa Del Sol of Central America.

Amid rolling hills of jungle and cleared land for pasture, Jaco opens into a wide cove of the Pacific ocean with rocky points on each end. The beach is a crescent shape framed by palm trees, surfer hotels, souvenir and boutique swim shops. There is good selection of hotels and restaurants, along with the occasional condo complex. By the standards of Central America, Jaco is one of the most developed beach towns, and has a prodigious main strip, which runs in parallel to the beach.

With sunshine year-round, a laid-back atmosphere and a long beach with great waves and turquoise waters make Tamarindo a popular destination for surfers and eco-adventures. Located on the Pacific coast, Tamarindo is one of the most developed beach towns of the vibrant Nicoya peninsula of Costa Rica.

Tamarindo is in the region of Nicoya with paved roads and tourist facilities. It’s known for beaches that have good surf, including Playa Tamarindo and Playa Langosta. To the north is Las Baulas National Marine Park, which is an important nesting site for leatherback sea turtles.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens is a popular ecological attraction in Costa Rica made famous for its waterfalls and animal sanctuary with over 100 species.

The property is 70 acres, of which 40 acres is cloud and rain forest. The remaining 30 acres is reforested pasture. The gardens are a breeding ground for over 25 species of butterflies, and maintains 4,000 at any time within the butterfly conservatory.
